Who can enter the contest?
The Alliance for Science Essay contest is open to all students in Grade 12 and below in public, private, parochial school, home school, or who are participating in a high school correspondence program.
How long should the essay be?
The essay, on the topic of “In Darwin’s Footsteps” must be no longer than one thousand (1,000) words. It must be written in English.
Why “In Darwin’s Footsteps?”

When must the essay be submitted?
All essays must be submitted byFebruary 12, 2009, the anniversary of Darwin’s birth.
How do I enter the contest?

In addition, to qualify for additional prizes offered by the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara to residents of Santa Barbara, CA County, you must must register by sending an email to hssb.essay@gmail.com with your name, address and name of your school and teacher. .
What are the Prizes?
The Alliance for Science prizes are described at http://www.allianceforscience.org/essay_2009_prizes. In addition to the prizes offered by the AfS, the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara (HSSB) will award additional prizes to any winning student who resides in Santa Barbara (California) County, and to their teachers. The amount of the additional prizes is expected to be about half of the AfS prizes. To qualify for the HSSB prizes, winners must register by e-mail to hssb.essay@gmail.com with your name, address and name of your school and teacher.
Why are the Humanists involved?
A core belief of Humanism is that a true understanding of our world can only be achieved through reason and rational inquiry. HSSB believes that it has no higher calling than to promote these ideals to the youth of our community through the study of Darwin and his work.
